Hard to imagine a time when country and western wasn't all-pervasive. I remember being impressed with Roy Clark's banjo skill as a youngster, but overall, I was not into country music at all, so I paid little attention to the show. I think I'd like it now, especially for the musical guests (especially anyone in bluegrass).
